Iron Mountain’s varsity softball team faced a tough challenge on Thursday as they took on Calumet in a doubleheader at Northside Park. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers struggled in both games, losing 21-2 in the first game and 21-4 in the second.
In the first game, Calumet came out strong, scoring 10 runs in the first inning, including back-to-back home runs. Despite Iron Mountain scoring a run in the second and third innings, Calumet continued to dominate, ultimately winning in just three innings. Juliana Tapio and Ava Marttila managed to tally singles for Iron Mountain, with Vivian Petrusch and Lindsey Sorenson each contributing an RBI.
In the second game, Iron Mountain took an early lead with a run in the first inning, but Calumet quickly responded, scoring seven runs in the second inning. The Cooper Kings continued to build on their lead, ultimately securing a 21-4 victory. Tapio and McKinlee Peterson stood out at the plate for Iron Mountain, each going 2 for 3. Despite their efforts, the Mountaineers were unable to overcome Calumet’s strong performance.
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back from these losses as they face Gwinn on Friday and Westwood on Monday. Despite the setbacks, the team remains determined to improve and compete at a high level in the upcoming games.
