IRS Alerts Taxpayers to Possible Scams Leading to Exaggerated Refund Requests

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a consumer alert warning taxpayers about tax scams and inaccurate social media advice that led to inflated refund claims during the past tax season. The IRS is cautioning taxpayers against falling for scams related to the Fuel Tax Credit, Sick and Family Leave Credits, and household employment taxes.

The IRS has identified three primary scams that have resulted in numerous false refund claims. These include the Fuel Tax Credit, which is meant for off-highway business and farming use, the Sick and Family Leave Credits, which were available for self-employed individuals during the pandemic but are not applicable for 2023 tax returns, and household employment taxes, where taxpayers are inventing fictional household employees to claim refunds.

Taxpayers who have fallen victim to these scams may face financial penalties, audits, or even criminal action for improper claims. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel emphasized the importance of recognizing these scams and advised taxpayers to verify their eligibility for the claims and consult a trusted tax preparer if needed.

The IRS has frozen refunds for affected taxpayers and will be sending letters requesting additional information to verify their claims. Taxpayers are urged to verify their identity and amend any incorrect claims using the IRS.gov tool. Failure to provide accurate documentation may result in penalties of up to $5,000 per return for filing frivolous claims.
