Yabor also highlights the importance of verifying the identity of anyone claiming to be from the IRS. Legitimate IRS representatives will have an HSPD-12 card and IRS-issued identification with serial numbers and photos. Asking to see these credentials can help individuals avoid falling victim to scams.
