A new study published in Nature Aging has shed light on a potential way to combat the effects of aging. Researchers have discovered that a type of lipid called bis(monoacylglycero)phosphates (BMPs) is present in higher amounts in the tissues of older adults and older mice.
Lipids are essential molecules in the body that play various roles, but high levels of certain lipids can increase the risk of disease. BMPs, in particular, have been linked to metabolic diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases related to aging.
In the study, researchers found that a brief exercise program was able to reduce the levels of BMPs in the muscle tissue of older women. This discovery suggests that exercise may have the potential to undo some of the effects of aging.
Alexandra Stolzing, PhD, a professor at Loughborough University, praised the study for its comprehensive analysis of lipids. However, she emphasized the need for further research to understand the impact of reducing BMP levels on health and fitness.
Douglas Vaughan, MD, director of the Potocsnak Longevity Institute at Northwestern University, highlighted the significance of BMPs as a molecular marker for age-related metabolic changes. He noted that the study’s findings were consistent across species, making them more relevant.
While more research is needed to fully understand how exercise supports healthy aging, the study’s results suggest that reducing BMP levels through physical activity could be a promising approach to slowing the aging process. This research opens up new possibilities for developing interventions that mimic the effects of exercise on aging.
