Is it worth waiting to buy a gaming handheld if you don’t already have one?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The gaming handheld market is abuzz with new releases and upcoming models, making it a tough decision for consumers on whether to buy now or wait for the next big thing. With the confirmation of the Asus ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go 2, Windows gaming handheld enthusiasts are advised to hold off on their purchase for now. The ROG Ally X, set for a reveal in June 2024, promises significant improvements over its predecessor, including a substantial increase in battery capacity. On the other hand, the Lenovo Legion Go 2 is expected to follow but with no set timetable for release, potentially a year or more away.

In contrast, those eyeing a Steam Deck, particularly the current OLED model, are encouraged to make the purchase now. Valve designer Lawrence Yang mentioned in a recent interview that a performance upgrade for the Steam Deck is at least two or three years away, indicating that a Steam Deck 2 launch may not happen until 2025 or 2026. Therefore, the Steam Deck OLED remains a top choice for 2024.

For retro gaming handheld enthusiasts, the good news is that there’s never a bad time to buy a retro device. With low performance demands and a constant stream of new releases like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and Ayaneo Pocket DMG, retro gaming handhelds offer a timeless gaming experience.

Ultimately, the decision to buy a gaming handheld now or wait for future releases depends on individual preferences and priorities. Whether you’re eager to experience the latest advancements or content with the current offerings, the diverse range of gaming handhelds ensures there’s something for everyone in the market.
