Is Kamala Harris the key to securing swing state votes for Joe Biden?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a recent poll conducted by Bloomberg News and Morning Consult, it has been revealed that an increasing number of voters in key swing states have expressed confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris’ ability to serve as president if President Joe Biden is unable to complete his term for any reason. This development could potentially neutralize a common Republican attack line regarding Mr. Biden’s age.

The poll results indicate that nearly half of swing state voters, accounting for 48 percent, now trust Vice President Harris to take over the presidency in the event that Mr. Biden is unable to continue his term. This marks a significant shift in public opinion since voters were first asked about their confidence in Harris last October.

While Vice President Harris still trails behind former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, the poll also reveals that she is the preferred choice to take on Mr. Trump if Mr. Biden is unable to complete the 2024 campaign. Voters have chosen Harris over other potential presidential hopefuls such as Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Governor Gavin Newsom, Governor Wes Moore, and Governor JB Pritzker.

As the first woman, first African-American, and first person of Asian descent to serve as Vice President, Harris has faced challenges in the past with her public profile and policy portfolio. However, the White House and President Biden’s re-election campaign have strategically utilized her in more assertive roles, such as pushing back against Republican efforts to ban books and restrict reproductive rights.

Overall, these poll results indicate a growing level of confidence in Vice President Harris’ leadership abilities and potential to step into the role of president if necessary, reshaping the political landscape in key swing states.
