Israel Successfully Thwarts Iranian Attack with Air Defenses

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel celebrated a major victory on Sunday as its air defenses successfully intercepted 99% of the more than 300 drones and missiles launched by Iran towards its territory. The unprecedented attack by Iran had put regional tensions on edge, with fears of a potential Israeli counter-strike looming.

In response to the attack, U.S. President Joe Biden convened a meeting of the Group of Seven advanced democracies to coordinate a united diplomatic response. While condemning the attack, the U.S. made it clear that it would not participate in any offensive action against Iran.

The attack by Iran was reportedly in retaliation for a strike on an Iranian consular building in Syria earlier in the month, which resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals. Israel stated that Iran launched a total of 170 drones, over 30 cruise missiles, and more than 120 ballistic missiles.

Despite the intensity of the attack, Israel’s air defenses, bolstered by collaboration with the U.S. and other allies, managed to prevent any significant damage. Israeli officials praised the successful interception of the threats, with Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stating that none of the drones and cruise missiles reached Israel, and only a few ballistic missiles got through.

Following the conclusion of the attack, Israel reopened its airspace and held a meeting of its War Cabinet. Key member Benny Gantz emphasized the country’s determination to build a regional coalition and hold Iran accountable for its actions.

The successful defense by Israel against the Iranian assault marks a significant milestone in the ongoing conflict between the two nations, with implications for the broader region. The response to the attack has garnered praise from both Israeli and U.S. officials, highlighting the effectiveness of their collaborative efforts in thwarting the threat posed by Iran.
