Israel Secures Spot in Eurovision 2024 Grand Final

MALMO, Sweden – Despite facing large protests and booing during their performance, Israel has secured a spot in the Eurovision 2024 grand final. Switzerland and the Netherlands, two of the favorites, also secured spots in Saturday’s grand final alongside Israel.

The annual kitsch-fest in the southern Swedish city of Malmo has attracted around 100,000 visitors, with heavy police presence to ensure safety amid possible unrest.

Swiss rapper and singer Nemo, 24, qualified from the second semi-final with his song ‘The Code’, while Joost Klein, 26, of the Netherlands, advanced with his song ‘Europapa’.

Nemo expressed his emotions during a press conference, stating, “Singing this song in front of a live audience and knowing that so many people are listening made me really emotional.”

The inclusion of queer representation in this year’s competition was highlighted by Nemo, as Irish contestant Bambie Thug also secured a spot in the final.

Israeli solo artist Eden Golan, 20, and her song ‘Hurricane’ also qualified for the grand show, which will feature performances from 26 countries.

Despite some booing and protests, Golan expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to perform and represent her nation with pride.

The Eurovision organizers faced calls to exclude Israel due to political reasons, but the competition remains a non-political event. Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli supporters staged demonstrations, reflecting the ongoing tensions surrounding Israel’s participation.

The European Broadcasting Union requested Israel to tweak their initial lyrics to participate, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Golan for her participation, commending her for contending with antisemitism.

The Eurovision 2024 grand final promises to be a diverse and engaging event, showcasing talent from across Europe and beyond.
