Israel expresses frustration over certain EU countries recognizing Palestine | News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Ireland, Norway, and Spain have made a bold move by formally recognizing Palestine as a state, citing the need for peace in the Middle East. This decision has sparked outrage from Israel, who has threatened consequences not only for the European countries but also for the Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

The recognition of Palestine fulfills a long-held Palestinian goal and puts pressure on Western powers to further the two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While it may not have immediate practical effects on the lives of Palestinians, it is seen as a crucial step in holding Israeli authorities accountable.

Currently, 143 out of 193 United Nations member states recognize Palestine as a state. Seven European Union members have also recognized Palestine, with Belgium, Malta, and Slovenia considering doing so in the future.

Israel has responded angrily to the recognition, recalling its ambassadors to the three countries and threatening punitive measures against the Palestinian people. The move has also drawn concern from Israel’s allies, including the US, the UK, France, and Germany, who question the timing of the announcement.

The failure of Western powers to confront Israel on the issue of the two-state solution has allowed Israeli settlements to continue growing on Palestinian territory, making any future agreement more challenging. Critics argue that this lack of action essentially supports the expansion of settlements and hinders the peace process in the region.
