The United Nations has added Israel to its “list of shame” for alleged violations against children in armed conflict, sparking a strong reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to a report by The Times of Israel, the UN included Israel and Hamas in the list, which also features notorious groups like the Islamic State and al-Qaeda. This marks the first time a democratic country like Israel has been included in the list.
Previous reports on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have accused Israel of grave rights violations against children. However, Israel had never been listed in the annexe of parties that have not taken measures to improve the protection of children, known as the “list of shame.”
In response to the UN’s decision, Prime Minister Netanyahu called it “delusional” and defended the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as the “most moral army in the world.” He criticized the UN for siding with “Hamas murderers” and accused the organization of rewarding terrorists.
Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, received the formal notification from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s chief of staff. Erdan reiterated that the IDF is committed to upholding moral standards and condemned the UN’s decision as aiding terrorists.
The Israeli Mission to the UN filmed the moment of notification, with Erdan emphasizing that the UN’s decision only serves to reward Hamas and incentivize the use of children for terror acts. Netanyahu and Erdan’s strong statements reflect Israel’s firm stance against the UN’s allegations.
