Residents in Gaza reported heavy Israeli fire in central Gaza on Friday, heightening regional tensions after Iran threatened reprisals over a recent strike in Syria that killed two Iranian generals.

As ceasefire talks continue in an effort to pause the six-month-old war, concerns are growing that Iran may launch an attack on Israel, prompting France to advise its citizens to avoid traveling to the region.

Mohammed al-Rayes, 61, described fleeing Israeli “air strikes and artillery shelling” in Nuseirat, central Gaza overnight, witnessing “fire and destruction” with many casualties in the streets. Another resident, Laila Nasser, 40, reported ongoing “shells and missiles” throughout the night.

Israel recently withdrew its troops from Khan Yunis after months of conflict but is now preparing for operations against Hamas operatives in Rafah, near the Egyptian border.

The Hamas media office reported dozens of new air strikes in Gaza’s central region, resulting in 25 people being hospitalized in Deir al-Balah city due to an air strike on a house belonging to the al-Tabatibi family.

The situation escalated following an Israeli air strike that destroyed Iran’s consulate building in Damascus, leading to increased tensions between Israel and Iran. The United States has pledged support for Israel despite diplomatic tensions, with concerns growing over a potential significant attack on Israel.

Truce talks in Cairo have yet to yield a breakthrough, with both sides accusing each other of walking away from reasonable offers. The UN has warned of an imminent famine in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for relief efforts in the devastated region.
