The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a groundbreaking order for Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The top United Nations court cited the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Rafah and deemed the ongoing actions by Israel as “disastrous.”

The order came in response to an emergency request from South Africa, which accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The ICJ president, Nawaf Salam, emphasized the need for Israel to cease its military operations in Rafah to prevent the physical destruction of the Palestinian population.

In addition to halting the offensive, the court also mandated Israel to open the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza for humanitarian aid and provide access to investigators. Israel has been given a month to report back on its progress in complying with the order.
