Israel predicts that the offensive in Gaza may continue for up to seven months.

The war in Gaza is set to continue through the end of the year, according to an Israeli official, who indicated that the fighting will persist beyond the military offensive against Hamas in Rafah. Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, stated that 2024 has been designated as a year of combat by Israel’s war cabinet.

Hanegbi emphasized that the goal is to destroy the military and governmental capabilities of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, with an expectation of seven more months of fighting to deepen their achievements. Despite international objections, Israeli tanks have advanced into central Rafah, signaling a prolonged conflict.

The Israeli government had initially suggested that entering Rafah would mark the conclusion of their war against Hamas, which began after an attack by the group resulted in casualties and hostages. However, the decision to press on with the offensive in Rafah indicates a shift in strategy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans for post-war governance in Gaza are now in question, as the ongoing military operations defy global outrage and calls for a ceasefire. The recent airstrike in Rafah, which resulted in numerous casualties, has drawn condemnation, but US President Joe Biden has not altered his support for Israel.

The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah, citing the disastrous humanitarian situation. Despite the mounting pressure, Israel remains steadfast in its military campaign, with the prospect of a prolonged conflict looming over the region.
