Israel has briefed the Biden administration on its plan to evacuate Palestinians from Rafah ahead of a potential invasion of the southern Gazan city, US officials revealed. The Israel Defense Forces informed the White House and aid groups operating in the region about their intention to relocate people from Rafah to al-Mawasi, a narrow strip of coastal land in southern Gaza.

However, the White House has cautioned Israel that it may face consequences if it proceeds with the invasion without a concrete plan to protect civilians’ lives. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of a comprehensive strategy to minimize the potential damage that a military operation in Rafah could cause.

The evacuation plan shared by Israel with the US government is still under discussion and has not been finalized. Approximately 1.5 million Palestinians have sought refuge in and around Rafah, with many fleeing the northern region of Gaza following previous bombardments by Israel in response to attacks by Hamas terrorists.

The United Nations humanitarian aid agency has warned that hundreds of thousands of people in Rafah could be at imminent risk of death if Israel goes ahead with its operation, as the city serves as a crucial entry point for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

While negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas are ongoing, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate Hamas’ presence in Rafah, regardless of any agreements reached. The situation remains tense as the international community closely monitors developments in the region.
