Israel is on high alert as Iran launches dozens of missiles and drones towards its enemy, prompting fears of a potential conflict. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRG) stated that the attack was in response to an alleged strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1, which resulted in the deaths of two generals and seven IRG members. Tehran has blamed Israel for the attack, although Israel has not publicly commented on the matter.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that an Iranian attack had begun, with the White House also acknowledging the situation. More than 100 explosive drones were launched by Iran, with the possibility of additional waves to follow. While the IDF did not confirm reports of cruise missiles being included in the attack, US officials predicted that Iran could launch more than 100 drones, dozens of cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

Reports indicate that drones carrying 20kg of explosives each were seen flying from Iran through Iraqi airspace towards Israel. US and British warplanes reportedly intercepted some of the drones over the Iraq-Syria border area. In response to the escalating tensions, Israeli aviation authorities closed the country’s airspace to all flights, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his war cabinet.

International reactions have poured in, with US President Joe Biden meeting national security officials to discuss the situation. Jordan announced the temporary closure of its airspace, while Egypt stated that its air defenses were on high alert. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned Iran’s actions, pledging to stand up for Israel’s security and that of regional partners. The situation remains fluid as Israel prepares to defend its airspace against further attacks.
