Israeli Government to Return Seized AP Equipment After Backlash

In a surprising turn of events, the Israeli government has announced that it will return a camera and broadcasting equipment that it had seized from The Associated Press. The decision comes after the government faced backlash for blocking the news organization’s live video of Gaza.

The AP equipment was confiscated from a location in southern Israel after the government accused the news organization of violating a new media law by providing images to the satellite channel Al Jazeera. This move was part of a broader crackdown on Al Jazeera, which saw the channel being shut down within Israel, its equipment confiscated, broadcasts banned, and websites blocked.

The seizure of the AP equipment sparked outrage from the Biden administration, journalism organizations, and even Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid. Pressure mounted on the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reverse its decision, leading to the announcement by Israel’s communications minister, Shlomo Karhi, that the equipment would be returned.

Karhi stated on the social platform X, “I have now ordered to cancel the action and return the equipment to the AP.” He also mentioned that the defense ministry would conduct a review of news outlets’ positioning of live video of Gaza. The AP had not been informed previously that the positioning of its live camera was an issue, with officials only pointing out that the images were appearing in real-time on Al Jazeera.

While the AP welcomed the decision to return its equipment, concerns remain about the Israeli government’s use of the foreign broadcaster law and the impact on independent journalism in Israel. Lauren Easton, vice president of corporate communications at the news organization, expressed these concerns, stating, “While we are pleased with this development, we remain concerned about the Israeli government’s use of the foreign broadcaster law and the ability of independent journalists to operate freely in Israel.”

The incident unfolded when officials from the Communications Ministry arrived at the AP location in the southern town of Sderot and seized the equipment, alleging a violation of the country’s foreign broadcaster law. The AP had been broadcasting a general view of northern Gaza before its equipment was confiscated, complying with Israel’s military censorship rules.

Israel’s move against the AP drew swift condemnation from journalism organizations and the Biden administration, which engaged with the Israeli government to express serious concern and request a reversal of the action. The White House emphasized the importance of a free press as an essential pillar of democracy.

The closure of Al Jazeera’s offices earlier this month had already raised alarms about press freedom in Israel. The law used to shut down Al Jazeera gives the communications minister wide leeway to enforce it against other media outlets, raising concerns about further restrictions on independent journalism.

The AP’s live video from Sderot has provided a rare independent perspective on the situation in Gaza, amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The international news outlet has remained in Gaza throughout the war, broadcasting scenes of airstrikes and overcrowded hospitals, while accusing Israel of atrocities.

The return of the seized equipment marks a positive development for press freedom in Israel, but concerns persist about the broader implications of the government’s actions on independent journalism. The AP and other media organizations will continue to monitor the situation closely as they strive to report on the conflict in Gaza with transparency and accuracy.
