Israel withdraws ambassadors from Ireland and Norway following their recognition of Palestinian statehood | Global Affairs

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz has taken a bold stance by ordering Israel’s ambassadors from Ireland and Norway to return to Israel immediately. This decision comes in response to Norway’s announcement that it would recognize a Palestinian state, with Ireland expected to follow suit.

Katz expressed his concerns, stating that the recognition of a Palestinian state by these countries sends a message that terrorism pays. He believes that such recognition could hinder efforts to secure the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and make a ceasefire less likely by rewarding extremist groups like Hamas and Iran. Katz also threatened to recall Israel’s ambassador to Spain if the country takes a similar position.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre defended his country’s decision, emphasizing that peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without recognition of a Palestinian state. Norway will officially recognize Palestine on May 28, in support of the Arab peace plan.

Several European Union countries have indicated their intention to recognize a Palestinian state, arguing that a two-state solution is crucial for lasting peace in the region. Norway, a strong advocate for a two-state solution, believes that Palestine has a fundamental right to an independent state.

The move comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Israeli forces conducting operations in Gaza and facing criticism for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the area. Norway’s recognition of Palestine marks a significant step towards a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
