Israel worried about potential ICC arrest warrants linked to Gaza conflict | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Israel is on edge as the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates potential arrest warrants for government officials in connection to the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The ICC, known for charging individuals with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, is looking into Hamas’ cross-border attack on October 7 and Israel’s subsequent military response.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has issued a warning to embassies about a potential “wave of severe antisemitism” following reports that arrest warrants may be imminent for senior Israeli political and military figures. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that any ICC decisions will not impact Israel’s actions but could set a dangerous precedent.

Israeli officials fear that arrest warrants could be issued for Netanyahu and other top officials for alleged violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza. The ICC is also reportedly considering warrants for Hamas leaders.

Despite not being a member of the ICC and not recognizing its jurisdiction, Israel is concerned about the potential implications of the court’s actions. The ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has stated that his team is actively investigating crimes allegedly committed in Gaza and will hold those responsible accountable.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza, with both sides facing scrutiny for their actions. The situation remains tense as the ICC’s investigation unfolds, with the potential for further escalation in the region.
