Israeli air strikes near Damascus injure eight Syrian soldiers

In a recent development, Syria’s defence ministry reported that eight soldiers were injured in Israeli air strikes near Damascus. The ministry stated that the strikes were launched from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a site near the capital city.

Israel, known for rarely commenting on individual strikes, has consistently expressed its stance against allowing Iran to expand its presence in Syria. The Israeli military has conducted numerous strikes in Syria since the onset of the civil war in 2011, primarily targeting army positions and Iran-backed fighters.

The frequency of these strikes escalated following Israel’s conflict with the Iran-backed Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In a recent incident on April 19, Israeli strikes targeted a Syrian army position in the country’s south, as reported by Syria’s government and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor.

The ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran have led to a series of retaliatory actions, including Iran launching drones and missiles against Israel in response to an attack on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus. The volatile situation in the region underscores the complex dynamics at play in the Syrian conflict, which has resulted in the loss of over half a million lives and the displacement of millions more since its inception in 2011.
