Israeli cable provider stops broadcasting Al Jazeera due to government ban

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Israel’s main cable provider, Hot, has made the decision to halt broadcasts of the Al Jazeera news station following a government ban approved on Sunday. The move comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Hamas militants attacking Israel’s main crossing point for delivering humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

The attack on the Kerem Shalom crossing reportedly left several Israelis wounded, prompting Israel to close the terminal and disrupt critical shipments of food and aid into Gaza. This incident has dealt a blow to ongoing cease-fire efforts mediated by Egypt and Qatar, with Israel also announcing the closure of the Qatari-owned Al Jazeera satellite channel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected Hamas’ latest demands and vowed to continue fighting, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to invading Rafah. The closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where shortages of food, medicine, and other essential items are already prevalent.

The attack has complicated the cease-fire talks in Egypt, with Hamas delegation in Cairo reporting “noticeable progress” while Israel has not sent a delegation and downplayed prospects for a full end to the war. Netanyahu accused Hamas of making unacceptable demands and reiterated Israel’s stance on continuing the fight until all objectives are achieved.

The decision to halt broadcasts of Al Jazeera and the ongoing conflict in Gaza highlight the deep-rooted tensions in the region, with Egypt and Qatar working alongside the United States to mediate a potential cease-fire. The situation remains fluid, with the closure of Al Jazeera threatening to further disrupt peace efforts.
