MK Sharren Haskel, a member of the National Unity party, made a significant visit to the United Kingdom on Wednesday to engage in discussions with British MPs regarding the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Iran. The purpose of the meeting was to address various pressing issues, including the collaboration between UNRWA and Hamas, the recent Iranian attack on Israel, and the rise of antisemitism in the West.
During the discussions, Haskel and the British MPs focused on the relationship between UNRWA and Hamas, particularly concerning the employees of both organizations. They also delved into the Iranian attack on Israel in April, where British RAF pilots successfully intercepted several drones and missiles aimed at Israel. This incident highlighted the need for international cooperation in addressing threats to Israel’s security.
In addition to these topics, Haskel also addressed the concerning rise of antisemitism in the Western world. She engaged with leading figures from the political and academic spheres to raise awareness about this issue and promote dialogue on combating antisemitism.
As part of her visit, Haskel spoke to students at Oxford University and the Pinsker Centre, discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict and the surge of antisemitism in academia globally. She also addressed the growing protests at universities worldwide, emphasizing the importance of open dialogue and civil discourse in addressing contentious issues.
Jonathan Hunter, a Trustee of the Pinsker Center, highlighted the center’s role in fostering dialogue and protecting academic freedom. Despite facing opposition from extremist student groups, the center remains committed to hosting events at prestigious universities like Oxford and the University of London.
Haskel emphasized the need for increased cooperation between the UK and Israel, particularly in combating Iranian influence in the Middle East and addressing antisemitism in academic institutions. She stressed the importance of dialogue and collaboration in effectively addressing these challenges and promoting tolerance and diversity in educational settings.
“In light of horrifying scenes in western higher education, there has never been a greater need to protect and preserve academic dialogue about the Middle East conflict on campus. We are proud to host events at Oxford University and the University of London despite extremist student groups who seek to silence us,” Hunter stated.
Haskel echoed these sentiments, calling for decisive action and civil discourse to combat the alarming rise of antisemitism on university campuses. She emphasized the value of education and diversity in academic institutions and the importance of upholding these values through open dialogue and cooperation.
Overall, Haskel’s visit to the UK served as a platform for meaningful discussions on critical issues affecting Israel, the Middle East, and academia. By engaging with British MPs, academic leaders, and students, she sought to promote awareness, dialogue, and cooperation in addressing complex challenges and fostering a more inclusive and tolerant society.
