Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has issued a bold ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, threatening to resign unless a post-war plan for the Gaza Strip is put in place. The tension between the two prominent figures in Israeli politics has reached a boiling point, with Gantz setting a deadline of 8 June for Netanyahu to outline a plan to achieve six strategic goals, including the end of Hamas rule in Gaza and the establishment of a multinational civilian administration for the territory.
In a stern warning to Netanyahu, Gantz emphasized the importance of putting national interests above personal agendas, stating, “If you choose the path of fanatics and lead the entire nation to the abyss, we will be forced to quit the government.” This ultimatum comes amidst ongoing fighting in both the southern city of Rafah and the northern town of Jabalia, where Israeli forces are engaged in operations against Hamas fighters.
The rift between Gantz and Netanyahu is further exacerbated by the differing views within the war cabinet, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also urging Netanyahu to clarify Israel’s intentions regarding civilian and military rule in Gaza. The lack of a clear strategy for the post-war scenario has raised concerns among cabinet members, with Gantz and Gallant advocating for a shift towards a diplomatic process to establish a governing body other than Hamas.
Gantz’s proposed strategic goals also include the return of all hostages held by Hamas, the repatriation of displaced Palestinian civilians, and the normalization of relations with Saudi Arabia to counter Iran and its allies. However, Netanyahu dismissed Gantz’s demands, warning that acquiescing to them would result in defeat for Israel and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The escalating tensions within the Israeli government have sparked debates over the country’s military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides. The chief of staff of Israel’s army, Herzi Halevi, has reportedly emphasized the need for a comprehensive post-war strategy to prevent repeated military campaigns against Hamas.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with civilian casualties mounting and displacement increasing, international pressure is mounting on Israel to prioritize the protection of civilians. President Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, is set to visit Israel to discuss the Biden administration’s opposition to a full-scale assault on Rafah without a plan to safeguard civilians.
The future of Gaza hangs in the balance as Israeli leaders grapple with the complexities of post-war governance and security challenges. The ultimatum issued by Benny Gantz underscores the urgency of addressing these issues and finding a sustainable solution to the conflict in Gaza.
