Israeli officials remove AP live shot of Gaza due to new media law

Israeli officials seized equipment belonging to The Associated Press in southern Israel on Tuesday, accusing the news organization of violating a new media law by providing images to Al Jazeera. The Qatari satellite channel is one of thousands of AP customers, receiving live video from various news organizations.

The AP strongly condemned the Israeli government’s actions, calling it an abuse of the country’s foreign broadcaster law. The Communications Ministry officials arrived at the AP location in Sderot and seized the equipment, citing violations of the law. This move comes after Israel previously shut down Al Jazeera’s offices and confiscated their equipment.

Despite being ordered to cease live transmission, the AP continued to broadcast a general view of northern Gaza, complying with Israel’s military censorship rules. Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government’s actions, calling it “an act of madness” and expressing concern over Israel’s international reputation.

The Foreign Press Association warned that Israel’s actions could have serious implications for press freedom in the country, with the law granting wide leeway to enforce against other media outlets. The White House stated they were looking into the situation, emphasizing the importance of allowing journalists to do their jobs.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to heightened tensions, with Al Jazeera and AP providing crucial coverage from Gaza. The AP’s previous Gaza office was destroyed during the 2021 conflict, with the army claiming it was used by Hamas for military purposes. The current seizure of equipment further underscores the challenges faced by journalists reporting from the region.
