Deep below Jerusalem, Israeli doctors are preparing for the worst as the lower-level war continues with the constant danger of escalation into something much bigger. Sky News has been granted exclusive access to an underground hospital where doctors are expanding capacity in case the current conflict intensifies.

Located below the Herzog Medical Centre, the underground hospital has increased its bed capacity to 350, with an additional 100 beds on the way. Dr. Yehezkel Caine, speaking to Sky News, highlighted the hospital’s readiness for biological and chemical attacks, with an airlock built of two separate sets of blast doors.

In preparation for worst-case scenarios like an all-out war with Hezbollah, the hospital has installed a whole new level of wards below the existing facility. Dr. Caine emphasized the need for such preparations, especially after recent attacks by Hamas and Iran that have heightened the threat to Israel’s civilian population.

Above ground, the Herzog Medical Centre continues to provide specialized care, including ventilator units, psycho-trauma treatment, and geriatric rehabilitation. The hospital is also equipped to evacuate patients to the underground bunkers in just a few hours in the event of an attack on Jerusalem.

As tensions escalate on the northern border, with Israel launching bombardments on Hezbollah in Lebanon, the doctors at Jerusalem’s underground hospital remain vigilant and prepared for any potential escalation in the conflict. Despite the ongoing danger, they are confident that they will be ready to handle any situation that may arise.
