The White House has reiterated that the United States was not involved in an airstrike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, despite accusations from Iran and Syria that Israel was responsible. The strike, which occurred on Monday and resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, prompted warnings of a “serious response” from Tehran and threats of “punishment and revenge” from Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby emphasized that the US had no role in the attack. “We had nothing to do with the strike in Damascus. We weren’t involved in any way whatsoever,” Kirby stated.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, responded to the strike by stating that Iran reserved the right to take reciprocal measures and would decide on the type of response and punishment against the aggressor.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, with the US accusing Iran of supporting proxy attacks on US and Western targets. In January, a drone attack killed three American soldiers at a US outpost in Jordan, which the US attributed to the Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq.
The situation remains fluid as Iran and its allies weigh their response to the Damascus strike, while the White House continues to deny any involvement in the incident. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
