Italian Open: Swiatek poised for Madrid-Rome double, set to take on Keys in quarterfinals

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek continued her impressive run at the Italian Open, defeating Angelique Kerber to advance to the quarterfinals. Swiatek, who needed eight set points to secure the first set, dominated the second set to secure a 7-5, 6-3 victory. This win marks her ninth consecutive victory as she aims to achieve a rare Madrid-Rome double.

Next, Swiatek will face Madison Keys, who also secured a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-1. Keys’ match was briefly interrupted by environmental protesters who stormed the court, causing a temporary suspension.

The German player is looking to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2013 to win the “dirt double” by claiming victories in both Madrid and Rome. The upcoming match between Swiatek and Keys will be a rematch of last week’s Madrid Open semifinal.

In the men’s tournament, both Madrid finalists suffered third-round exits. Andrey Rublev, the fourth seed in Rome and last week’s Madrid winner, was upset by French qualifier Alexandre Muller. Meanwhile, Madrid runner-up Felix Auger-Aliassime was defeated by ninth-seeded Alex De Minaur.

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev, seeded second, was set to play Serbian qualifier Hamad Medjedovic in a later match. The Italian Open continues to deliver thrilling matches and surprises as the competition heats up in Rome.
