Italian town hopes to boost tourism with nude weddings

Nudist couples looking to tie the knot in their birthday suits will soon have the opportunity to do so on the picturesque Is Benas beach in Sardinia, Italy. This stunning coastal destination, known for its tan line-free tanning opportunities, will now allow nude weddings, making it a unique and liberating choice for couples seeking a natural and free-spirited celebration.

The decision to permit nude weddings on Is Benas beach came after a German couple expressed their desire to exchange vows on the sandy shores without any clothes. San Vero Milis Mayor Luigi Tedeschi, who has been in office since 2015, officially designated the beach as clothing optional two years ago and recently announced the plan to host weddings for nudist couples.

Tedeschi believes that these nude weddings will promote freedom and attract mindful tourists to the area. He emphasized that nudity is not about sex but rather a philosophy of life and a connection to nature for naturists. The mayor’s decision to allow nude weddings is also seen as a statement of freedom and self-expression in a time when nationalist movements are gaining traction in Europe.

In an interview with CNN, Tedeschi explained, “I think we’re living in a delicate moment for people’s freedom, with the nationalist movements in Europe. People protest and get rounded up by the police, or they’re intimidated. So I think we need to do things to show that people are free. Most people want freedom, not a regime.”

The mayor hopes that hosting nude weddings will not only celebrate naturism but also attract more tourism, particularly from naturists who appreciate being in touch with nature. He highlighted that the area designated for naturists is always kept pristine, offering a serene and untouched environment for those who practice non-sexual social nudity.

According to estimates, Europe is home to around 20 million naturists, with approximately 500 thousand residing in Italy. Leaders of San Vero Milis are optimistic that these residents, as well as naturists from other regions, will be eager to visit Is Benas beach for their nude weddings. However, Tedeschi assured that those who may have reservations about nude ceremonies can simply walk past or admire the sea during the event.

The decision to allow nude weddings on Is Benas beach is a bold and progressive move that reflects a commitment to freedom, self-expression, and the celebration of nature. As couples prepare to say “I do” in their most natural state, the stunning backdrop of Sardinia’s west coast promises to create unforgettable and liberating memories for all who choose to embrace this unique wedding experience.
