PADUA, Italy – Italy, known for having the oldest population in the European Union, is also home to the world’s fastest 90-year-old woman sprinter. Emma Maria Mazzenga, born on Aug. 1, 1933, recently set another world record in the 90 and over age group by running the 200 meters outdoors in an impressive 51.47 seconds.
Mazzenga, a humble athlete, holds five world records, nine European records, and 28 best Italian performances in various categories of Masters sprinting. Despite her age, she continues to break records and push the boundaries of what is possible for older athletes.
After her record-breaking run, Mazzenga expressed her surprise at her speed, stating, “I am very happy and satisfied, and also a bit surprised because I didn’t think I went that fast.” Her dedication to the sport and meticulous race rituals, such as running without socks and never wearing the same shoes for training, have contributed to her success.
Mazzenga’s running career as a Masters athlete began at the age of 53 and has been a source of comfort and companionship throughout her later years. She emphasized the importance of staying active and surrounded by people, highlighting the positive impact that running has had on her life.
Looking ahead, Mazzenga has her sights set on the Italian championships starting in June and the world championships in Sweden next year. Despite her remarkable achievements, she maintains a humble attitude, joking that she prefers not to make long-term plans.
