Italy’s Tourism Industry Booms, Generating $233 Billion in 2023

Italy’s travel and tourism industry continues to be a powerhouse, with a new Economic Impact Report (EIR) from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) revealing that the industry generated a significant $233 billion for the country’s economy in 2023. This accounted for 10.5 percent of Italy’s total economic output.

The report also highlighted the industry’s role in job creation, with 185,000 new jobs generated last year, bringing the total industry-related employment in Italy to 2.97 million. International visitors played a significant role in this success, with spending in Italy by overseas visitors increasing by 19 percent year-over-year to reach $55 billion.

Looking ahead to 2024, the forecast for Italy’s tourism industry remains strong. The industry is expected to contribute $239 billion to the country’s economy, supporting an anticipated 100,000 new jobs. Spending by international visitors is also projected to reach $60 billion.

The introduction of the nomad visa by the Italian government has been credited with driving much of this growth, encouraging longer stays and increased spending by visitors. WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson praised Italy as one of the world’s most iconic destinations and highlighted the sector’s importance in the country’s economy.

With record-breaking numbers in 2023 and a promising outlook for 2024, Italy’s tourism industry continues to play a vital role in the country’s economic success.
