Italy’s Travel and Tourism sector is on a positive trajectory, with the latest report from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) revealing that the sector contributed €215 billion to the country’s economy last year. This upward trend is expected to continue, with projections indicating that the sector will contribute over €223 billion to Italy’s wealth in 2024.

The report also highlights the sector’s role in job creation, with an additional 100,000 jobs expected to be added to reach almost 3.1 million. International travelers are predicted to spend €56.7 billion this year, while domestic spending is expected to reach €119 billion.

In a bid to attract longer stays and increase international spending, Italy recently introduced the Digital Nomad Visa program. This initiative allows foreigners to work remotely from Italy for companies abroad, provided they earn at least €28,000 per year and have health insurance and accommodation arranged.

Looking ahead, the WTTC forecasts significant growth for Italy’s Travel and Tourism sector, with a projected contribution of €270 billion to the economy by 2034. This growing sector is also expected to be a major source of job creation, with 3.56 million people nationwide projected to be employed in the industry.

Meanwhile, the EU Travel and Tourism sector saw a slight growth in 2023 compared to 2019 levels, with the sector reaching 1.65 trillion euros and creating over 23.5 million jobs. International expenses increased by 11.5 percent, reaching €471.5 billion, while domestic visitor spending surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reaching €963 billion. The WTTC forecasts continued growth for the region, with GDP contribution expected to reach almost 1.75 trillion euros, and international and domestic visitor spending on the rise.
