Itron Solutions Chosen by Australian Council for Water Distribution System Modernization

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Itron, Inc. and Cairns Regional Council are teaming up to enhance water security and conservation efforts in Queensland, Australia. The collaboration involves deploying Itron’s intelligent connectivity and analytic solution, which includes Intelis® wSource NB-IoT water meters and the utility’s existing mesh network technology utilizing Itron’s Temetra® NB-IoT digital platform for data collection and management.

Over the next three years, the Itron solution will be implemented as part of the Council’s comprehensive water security plan to leverage technology for identifying water leaks and enhancing customer experience. This initiative follows the successful completion of phase one of the Council’s smart water network project, which included the deployment of Intelis ultrasonic water meters and an integrated IoT network solution.

In this second phase, Itron and the Council will work together to install additional Intelis smart water meters managed by Itron’s Temetra NB-IoT digital platform. This will improve the collection, tracking, and management of water data from all endpoints within the network, addressing operational challenges related to water.

The benefits of Itron’s intelligent connectivity solution for the Council include faster identification of water leaks, improved customer experience through data-driven insights, extended meter life, and reduced costs. Don Reeves, senior vice president of Outcomes at Itron, emphasized the importance of proactive water infrastructure deployment in the face of increasing global water scarcity.

The collaboration between Itron and Cairns Regional Council sets an example for other utilities and municipalities to prepare for future water management challenges. By leveraging innovative technology, the Council aims to ensure efficient water resource management and asset maintenance for the benefit of the community.
