The J. Peltier Construction 8U Plus hockey team made history by clinching the state championship title in Frazier over the weekend of March 22-24. This group of exceptional 8-year-olds displayed remarkable talent and teamwork as they dominated their competition to secure the coveted trophy.
The 8U Plus level, introduced by the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association this season, aims to help players transition from half-ice 8U to full-ice 10U hockey. Coach Jeff Baril, who also serves as the 8U coordinator, highlighted the importance of this new level in preparing young players for the challenges of full-ice hockey.
The team, consisting of 11 boys and one girl, showcased their skills and dedication throughout the season, going undefeated in eight games against Upper Peninsula teams. Despite forming in January and having limited time to practice together, the players quickly bonded and excelled on the ice.
Their journey to the state championship was nothing short of impressive, with victories over tough opponents like Rockford, Trenton, and Bay County. The team’s energy and understanding of the game’s nuances were evident in their flawless execution on the ice.
Coach Baril, along with assistant coaches Tim Viola and Brady Flachs, focused on teaching the players the fundamentals of full-ice hockey, including line changes, offsides, and positional play. The team’s commitment to learning and improving was evident in their dominant performances throughout the tournament.
As they celebrated their well-deserved victory, the team’s camaraderie and teamwork stood out as key factors in their success. Coach Baril emphasized the importance of playing as a team and supporting one another, highlighting the positive impact it had on their performance.
The J. Peltier Construction 8U Plus team’s state championship win is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and unity on and off the ice. Their remarkable achievement will be remembered as a shining moment in Copper Country hockey history.
