Jackie Shroff Seeks Protection of His Personality and Publicity Rights in Delhi High Court

Actor Jackie Shroff has taken legal action to protect his personality and publicity rights by filing a suit in the Delhi High Court against various entities using his name, photographs, voice, and the word “Bhidu” without his consent.

In the suit, Shroff seeks to safeguard his name, voice, image, likeness, and all other elements of his persona that are distinctive and could cause confusion and deception among the public if used without authorization.

The court, presided over by Justice Sanjeev Narula, has issued a summons on the actor’s suit and will consider the case tomorrow regarding the interim injunction application.

Shroff is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent the defendants from infringing on his personality and publicity rights for their commercial or personal gain by using his name, nicknames like ‘Jaggu Dada’ and ‘Bhidu’, voice, image, and other attributes exclusively identifiable with him.

The suit also addresses the violation of Shroff’s moral rights in his performances, as well as the unauthorized use of his image and voice for commercial purposes. The actor’s plea asks the court to restrain a restaurant named ‘Bhidu Shawarma’ from using his name as part of its trade name or any other deceptively similar trademark.

This legal action by Jackie Shroff follows similar cases by other Bollywood actors like Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan, who have also sought protection against the unauthorized use of their personalities for commercial purposes. The Delhi High Court has previously ruled in favor of these actors, setting a precedent for the protection of celebrities’ rights in India.
