Jaishankar expresses concern over IMEC delay amidst West Asia situation | World News

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is facing delays due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, causing concern among stakeholders. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his worries about the project’s timeline, stating that the initial expectations have to be adjusted given the current situation.

In an exclusive interview with PTI, Jaishankar emphasized that all parties involved in the IMEC are still committed to the initiative despite the challenges. The IMEC, which aims to establish a comprehensive road, railroad, and shipping network connecting Saudi Arabia, India, the United States, and Europe, is seen as a crucial step towards integrating Asia, the Middle East, and the West.

The initiative also includes plans for an electricity cable network, a hydrogen pipeline, and a high-speed data cable network to boost economic growth in partner countries. Additionally, the IMEC is viewed as a strategic move by like-minded nations to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which has faced criticism for its lack of transparency and respect for national sovereignty.

The IMEC agreement was signed on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi, involving India, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, the US, and other G20 partners. However, escalating tensions in West Asia, particularly the recent attacks on Israel by Hamas, have complicated the situation.

India has been advocating for de-escalation and a return to peace negotiations for a two-state solution in Palestine. The future of the IMEC project remains uncertain as stakeholders navigate through the complex geopolitical landscape in the region.
