Jaismine Lamboria to step in for Parveen in Olympic qualifiers’ 57kg category following suspension

Indian boxer Jaismine Lamboria will step up to compete in the second Olympic boxing qualifiers in Thailand starting on May 24, following the suspension of Parveen Hooda, who held the women’s 57kg category quota for the Paris Games. Parveen was handed a 22-month suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for three whereabouts failures in the span of 12 months.

The Boxing Federation of India announced on Saturday that Jaismine will now represent India in the 57kg category at the upcoming qualifiers after Parveen’s suspension by the International Testing Agency (ITA). This decision came after India was forced to surrender the women’s 57kg category Olympic quota due to Parveen’s suspension.

Jaismine, who previously competed in the 60kg category in the first qualifiers and the Hangzhou Asian Games, is no stranger to success, having won a bronze medal in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The suspension of Parveen, a 2022 world championship bronze-medallist, has brought unprecedented embarrassment to Indian boxing. Despite the setback, three Indian boxers – Nikhat Zareen, Preeti, and Lovlina Borgohain – have already secured Olympic quotas for India in their respective weight categories.
