Director James Gunn has recently debunked a conspiracy theory suggesting he had prior knowledge of Henry Cavill’s Superman recasting while promoting “The Suicide Squad.” Gunn clarified the timeline discrepancies that led to these speculations, putting an end to the rumors.

In a post on Threads, Gunn explained that he couldn’t have known about Cavill’s exit during “The Suicide Squad” promotions in 2021 as he wasn’t overseeing DC Studios at that time. The announcement of Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Studios came in December 2022, well after the film’s release.

Fans began speculating after actor Nathan Fillion mentioned a conversation with Gunn at “The Suicide Squad” premiere party, where Gunn allegedly hinted at Fillion’s role as Guy Gardner in a new Superman movie. Gunn clarified that this conversation actually took place at the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” party, long after his involvement with DC Studios began.

Responding to a fan’s mention of the conspiracy theory, Gunn expressed confusion over the claims and reiterated that his involvement with Superman was always intended as a new story, not part of a grand plan to reboot the DC Universe.

David Corenswet has been announced as the new Superman in Gunn’s upcoming film, scheduled for release on July 11, 2025. Corenswet confirmed his role on social media, expressing gratitude to fans for their support and patience. With Corenswet stepping into the iconic role, the DC Universe undergoes another significant shift under Gunn and Safran’s leadership.
