Japan Reacts to Biden’s Comments on “Xenophobia” and Economic Growth

Japan has expressed disappointment over US President Joe Biden’s recent remarks linking “xenophobia” to the economic challenges faced by Asian nations, including Japan. The top government spokesperson in Japan described Biden’s comments as “regrettable” during a regular news conference on Tuesday.

Biden had made the controversial statement at a Washington fund-raising event, where he argued that migration has been beneficial for the US economy. He pointed out that countries like China, Japan, and India were struggling economically due to their reluctance to embrace immigrants.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that Japan had conveyed its concerns to the United States regarding Biden’s comments. However, he emphasized that the strong ties between Japan and the US remain intact, and Tokyo is committed to further strengthening their relationship.

Japan, known for its homogeneity, has traditionally been cautious about immigration. Despite facing demographic challenges such as declining birth rates and an aging population, Japan has been hesitant to implement a comprehensive immigration program.
