Japan retains title as mixed team champions at Judo World Championship

The 2024 Abu Dhabi World Judo Championships came to an exhilarating conclusion with the mixed team competition taking center stage on the 6th day of the tournament. The dynamic 6 vs 6 showdown showcased the essence of teamwork, with three men and three women from each team battling it out for victory.

In the semi-final, Japan faced off against Uzbekistan in a tense match. Japan took an early lead with a hold down from Mao ARAI, but Uzbekistan fought back with an impressive ippon. However, Japan ultimately emerged victorious with a 4-1 win, securing their spot in the gold medal match.

The semi-final between France and Georgia was a closely contested affair, with both teams trading wins in the first four contests. World Champion Pinot and Axel Clerget sealed the victory for France, sending them through to the gold medal match.

In a familiar final matchup, Japan once again faced off against France. Japan, who had won the previous six encounters between the two teams, continued their dominance with early wins in the heavyweight category. Despite a valiant effort from France, Japan emerged victorious once again, claiming their seventh consecutive World Mixed Team Championship title.

The gold medals were awarded by President of the IJF Mr. Marius VIZER and Mr. Max-Hervé GEORGE, CEO of Icona Capital, with the gold trophy presented by President of the UAE Judo Federation Mohammed Bin Thaaloob ALDEREI. Japan’s TAMAOKI expressed his delight at the team’s success, stating, “It’s amazing to have the seventh consecutive win in a row.”

As the tournament came to a close, a flag passing ceremony was held to officially hand over the honor of hosting the World Championships to Hungary for 2025. The 2024 Abu Dhabi World Judo Championships will be remembered for its thrilling matches and impressive displays of skill and sportsmanship.
