Japanese Game Studios Are Gradually Shifting Their Focus to PC Game Releases

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Japanese game studios are making a significant shift towards focusing on PC releases, marking a new trend in the gaming industry. In the past, there was a noticeable gap between the release of games on consoles and PCs, but now more Japanese games are hitting the PC platform on day one.

The momentum started strong this year with major releases like TEKKEN 8, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Persona 3 Reload, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 all making their debut on PC alongside their console counterparts. One indie game, Palworld, quickly rose to success by selling over 6 million copies in just 4 days after its release on Steam early access, surpassing even Counter-Strike 2 in peak concurrent player count.

The surge in Japanese PC gaming can be attributed to the growth of the PC gaming market in Japan, which saw a 43% increase in revenue from 2022 to 2024. Factors like the popularity of competitive multiplayer titles like Apex Legends and Valorant, as well as the rise of handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck, have contributed to this shift.

Japanese publishers are recognizing the potential of the global PC market and are prioritizing multi-platform releases to reach a wider audience. Capcom, SEGA, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and Square Enix are among the leading studios embracing PC releases, with Capcom’s COO emphasizing the importance of PC in driving global sales.

The future looks bright for Japanese PC games, with hopes for more simultaneous releases on PC and console with the same level of quality. This shift not only benefits players by providing more accessibility to high-quality titles but also opens up new opportunities for Japanese studios in the global gaming market.
