Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida delivered a powerful address to a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance at a critical moment in history. Kishida praised the U.S. for its past role in shaping the international order and championing freedom and democracy, but also acknowledged a sense of self-doubt among some Americans about their country’s global role.

Highlighting the challenges facing the world today, including threats to freedom and democracy, climate change, and technological advancements, Kishida emphasized the need for the U.S. to continue playing a pivotal role in global affairs. He specifically pointed to the strategic challenges posed by China, North Korea, and Russia in Ukraine.

As Japan’s closest friend and ally, Kishida assured the U.S. that Japan stands shoulder to shoulder with them in the fight for liberty and democracy. He shared personal anecdotes of his time living in the U.S. as a child, highlighting the special connection he feels to the country.

The address marked only the second time a Japanese prime minister has formally spoken to Congress, with the last instance occurring in 2015. The meeting with Kishida also marked the first joint session with a foreign leader since Speaker Mike Johnson took office.

Following the address, Kishida met with congressional leaders to deepen diplomatic and security relationships between the two countries. The visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening ties between the U.S. and Japan, particularly in the face of growing challenges from China and other global threats.
