Jayson Werth compares his horse’s Belmont Stakes win to winning the World Series

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Jayson Werth, a former MLB player and World Series champion, found himself in a different winner’s circle on Saturday as his horse, Dornoch, won the 2024 Belmont Stakes. Werth, who co-owns the horse, was notably absent from a reunion of the Philadelphia Phillies’ 2008 World Series team in London, as he was busy watching his horse defy the odds and claim victory.

Dornoch, with jockey Luis Saez up, took the lead early in the race and held off co-favorite Seize the Grey to secure the win. The victory not only brought glory to Werth and his co-owners but also a hefty prize of $1.2 million.

In a post-race interview with Fox Sports, Werth expressed his elation at the win, comparing it to his World Series triumph with the Phillies in 2008. He emphasized the significance of horse racing as a sport and hailed the Belmont Stakes victory as a pinnacle moment.

Werth’s foray into horse racing began in 2021 during his post-retirement phase, and he eventually bought into Dornoch in 2022 after a chance encounter at an auction. The horse, with a prestigious pedigree that includes the brother of a Kentucky Derby winner, proved to be a wise investment for Werth and his fellow owners.

Having enjoyed a successful career in baseball, Werth now adds a Belmont Stakes victory to his list of accomplishments, showcasing his versatility and passion for sports beyond the diamond. The unexpected journey from MLB star to horse racing enthusiast has certainly paid off for Werth, proving that winning comes in many forms.
