Jeff Hall, a Stellar Researcher from Lowell, Shines as Champion for Dark Skies

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Lowell Observatory Executive Director Jeff Hall has been hailed as a champion for dark skies, astronomical discovery, and public education. Known for his diplomatic approach and strategic thinking, Hall has played a crucial role in preserving Flagstaff’s dark skies and advancing scientific research.

One of Hall’s notable achievements was his involvement in addressing the issue of bright white LED lights near the Flagstaff Mall. When the city switched to LEDs without consulting astronomers, Hall stepped in to find a solution. By renaming the investigation into LED street lighting as “SLEDS” (Street Lighting to Enhance Dark Skies), Hall helped ensure that Flagstaff made the best choice for preserving its dark skies.

In addition to his work on light pollution, Hall has made significant contributions to solar research and the study of sun-like stars. His leadership at Lowell Observatory has led to the completion of projects like the Lowell Discovery Telescope and the upcoming Marley Foundation Astronomy Discovery Center.

Chris Luginbuhl, a member of the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition, praised Hall for his dedication to dark skies and public education. “He really has been a champion throughout his career,” Luginbuhl said.

For his unwavering commitment to dark skies and scientific advancement, the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition has recognized Jeff Hall as a steadfast Dark Skies Champion. Hall’s legacy as a bullfighter for dark skies and a leader in astronomical research continues to inspire and shape the future of astronomy in Flagstaff and beyond.
