The United States played a crucial role in helping Israel fend off a direct aerial attack from Iran over the weekend, as President Joe Biden gathered leaders from the Group of Seven countries to address the escalating tensions in the region.

Israeli authorities reported that with U.S. assistance, they were able to successfully intercept and shoot down dozens of drones and missiles launched by Iran, preventing any significant damage. U.S. officials emphasized that Iran’s intent was to cause destruction and casualties, which could have led to a dangerous escalation across the Middle East.

During a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Biden made it clear that the U.S. would not participate in any offensive actions against Iran, urging for strategic thinking to avoid further escalation. This approach aligns with ongoing efforts to encourage restraint in Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza and protect civilian lives in the region.

Following the G7 videoconference, the leaders issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s attack on Israel and expressing full solidarity and support for the country’s security. They also warned Iran of further measures in response to any destabilizing actions, including the possibility of listing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization and imposing additional sanctions.

The G7 leaders also pledged to enhance cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including working towards a ceasefire and providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need. The discussions highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing the complex challenges in the region and preventing further escalation.
