Joe Biden, US President, promises to do whatever it takes to rebuild Baltimore bridge as cleanup efforts continue – Global News

President Joe Biden took to the skies on Friday to survey the devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, a crucial East Coast shipping route now obstructed by wreckage. The tragic incident, caused by a cargo ship collision on March 26, claimed the lives of six individuals and disrupted the flow of traffic through the Mid-Atlantic state’s shipping corridor.

From aboard his Marine One helicopter, Biden received a firsthand briefing from local officials on the economic impact of the bridge collapse, particularly on the Baltimore port, a key hub for automobile shipments. Pledging unwavering support for the reconstruction efforts, Biden vowed to mobilize federal resources to rebuild the bridge as swiftly as possible.

In a show of solidarity with the affected families, Biden met with the loved ones of the deceased victims, all immigrants from Mexico and Central America who tragically lost their lives while working on maintenance tasks on the bridge. As recovery efforts continue to retrieve the remaining bodies trapped underwater, concerns are mounting over the economic toll of the port’s closure on the regional economy.

The White House has requested federal coverage for the estimated $2 billion bridge replacement cost, with some Republican lawmakers expressing opposition to using new federal funds for the reconstruction. Despite the challenges, Biden’s administration remains committed to covering the entire reconstruction cost, with $60 million in emergency relief already allocated.

As negotiations with lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, unfold, the road to securing funding for the bridge’s reconstruction is fraught with complexities and potential obstacles. The House Freedom Caucus has outlined specific demands, highlighting the intricate bipartisan consensus needed to move forward with the reconstruction efforts.
