Johnson County high schools are making waves in the education world, as they dominate the latest ranking of Kansas public schools by U.S. News & World Report. The publication’s yearly state-by-state “Best High School Rankings” for 2024 revealed that seven out of the top 10 spots in Kansas were claimed by Johnson County schools.

Blue Valley schools led the pack, with all five high schools in the district securing spots in the top 10. Additionally, a school each from Shawnee Mission and USD 232 made the prestigious list. With around 18,000 high schools ranked nationally, this achievement is truly commendable.

Superintendent Tonya Merrigan of Blue Valley expressed pride in her district’s teachers and staff, attributing the success to their hard work and dedication. The rankings are based on six key factors, including college readiness, state assessment proficiency, and graduation rate.

While Blue Valley schools dominated the top spots, other Johnson County schools like Olathe Northwest, Mill Valley, and Shawnee Mission South also made their mark in the top 20. The top spot in Kansas went to Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Kansas.

Principal Sam Ruff of De Soto High School in USD 232 emphasized the importance of high expectations and support for students, regardless of national recognition. Both Merrigan and Ruff credited the success to not only the high schools but also the efforts of middle and elementary school teachers, as well as supportive parents and the community.

The recognition of Johnson County schools in the state rankings highlights the commitment to providing quality education and support for students, setting a high standard for academic excellence in the region.
