In a thrilling Section VI Class C championship baseball game at Diethrick Park in Jamestown on Sunday, Wilson’s Tyler Johnston delivered a masterful performance on the mound to lead his team to a 3-1 victory over Gowanda.

Johnston, who squatted down and bowed his head to calm his heartbeat before the bottom of the seventh inning, allowed just three hits, struck out 12 batters, hit a batter, and didn’t issue a walk. His dominant pitching propelled Wilson to their first sectional crown since 1996.

Despite giving up an unearned run in the second inning, Johnston’s stellar performance was enough to secure the win for the Lakemen. The victory advances Wilson (14-7) to the Far West Regional, where they will face the Section V champion at Salamanca High School on Friday.

Gowanda (16-6), the defending champion, put up a tough fight, but a couple of defensive miscues led to all three of Wilson’s runs. Johnston’s exceptional pitching kept the Panthers at bay, allowing only one player to reach second base after the second inning.

Coach Bill Atlas praised Johnston’s control and effectiveness on the mound, highlighting his ability to consistently throw strikes and keep the opposition off balance.

With Johnston likely to take the mound again in the upcoming regional game, Wilson’s prospects look bright as they aim to continue their playoff success. Despite the disappointment of the loss, Gowanda remains optimistic about their future, with plans to regroup and come back stronger next season.
