The Department of Senior Affairs and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico are teaming up to host a free health event in honor of National Senior Health & Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The event, which will take place at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., is open to adults aged 50 and over.
National Senior Health & Fitness Day is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting the importance of regular exercise and providing older adults with resources to improve their health. In Albuquerque, over 100,000 seniors are expected to participate in various local events.
Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the significance of staying active for a healthy and vibrant lifestyle, especially in a multigenerational community like Albuquerque. Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs, highlighted the importance of regular exercise in maintaining independence and overall well-being.
The event will feature group exercise demonstrations such as tai chi, yoga, and dance, as well as a mini-health fair, climbing wall, health screenings, and low-impact walking events. Dr. Latha Shankar, Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, expressed pride in partnering with the city to support the health and wellness of older adults.
