Julian Assange of WikiLeaks awaits US extradition decision

After 13 years of legal battles and detentions, a British court is set to make a final decision on Monday regarding the extradition of WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange to the United States. Two judges at the High Court in London will determine whether the court is satisfied with U.S. assurances that Assange, 52, would not face the death penalty and could rely on the First Amendment right to free speech if he were to stand trial for spying in the U.S.

Assange’s wife, Stella, expressed uncertainty about the outcome, stating, “I have the sense that anything could happen at this stage. Julian could be extradited, or he could be freed.” Assange’s legal team is prepared for multiple scenarios, including his potential release, extradition, or further legal battles.

The U.S. authorities seek to prosecute Assange over 18 charges, mostly under the Espionage Act, for his role in leaking classified U.S. military documents and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks. Supporters of Assange argue that the prosecution is an attack on journalism and free speech, while calls for the case to be dropped have come from various human rights groups, media bodies, and political leaders.

If the High Court rules in favor of extradition, Assange’s legal options in Britain will be exhausted, prompting his lawyers to seek an emergency injunction from the European Court of Human Rights. On the other hand, if the judges reject the U.S. submissions, Assange will have permission to appeal his extradition case on three grounds, potentially delaying a final decision until next year.

Stella Assange remains determined to fight for her husband’s freedom, regardless of the court’s decision. She emphasized the toll that years of legal battles and uncertainty have taken on their family, expressing her commitment to continue the fight until Assange is free.
