June 6 U.S. and Global News

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Today, the world commemorated the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, with about 200 survivors of the historic event in attendance. Among the thousands gathered, notable figures such as Ukrainian President Zelenskyy were present, while Russian President Vladimir Putin was notably absent, as he was not invited to the ceremony by French President Macron.

During the ceremony, President Biden delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the importance of defending democracy and drawing parallels between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Hitler’s attempts to dominate Europe. Biden’s words were a clear message to leaders like Putin and former President Trump, stating, “To surrender to bullies, to bow down to dictators, is simply unthinkable.”

In other news, New York City police have initiated the process to revoke Donald Trump’s concealed carry permit, as he is now considered a convicted felon and ineligible to possess firearms. Trump, who has three pistols licensed in his name in New York, reportedly turned in two of them after his permit was suspended.

Meanwhile, tragedy struck in Gaza as at least 30 people were reported killed in an Israeli attack on a school being used as a shelter for Palestinian refugees. The Israeli military claimed the school was being used by Hamas as an operational headquarters, while the U.N. Agency for Palestinian Refugees was operating it as a shelter.

In financial news, the European Central Bank announced a cut in interest rates for the first time since 2019, citing a decrease in inflation rates. The one-quarter percent cut brings the bank’s interest rate down to 3.75%, aligning with the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank’s target inflation rate of 2%.

Additionally, the National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes hitting five communities in Maryland last night, causing injuries and significant damage. Tragically, a tornado in Livonia, Michigan, claimed the life of a young boy with no advance warning issued due to its rapid development.
