Just 33% of Americans believe Donald Trump broke the law in hush money case

A new poll reveals that nearly one-third of American adults believe that former President Donald Trump acted illegally in the hush money case involving adult film star Stormy Daniels. The poll also showed that if Trump were found guilty in this case, 50 percent of Americans would not consider him fit for office.

In addition to the hush money case, another poll found that a majority of voters think Trump committed serious federal crimes. 53 percent of respondents in a New York Times/Siena College poll believe Trump has committed serious crimes, while 39 percent disagree.

The poll also showed that President Joe Biden is closing in on Trump in recent surveys, with Trump now just one percentage point ahead at 46 to 45 percent, with eight percent unsure or declining to answer.

Jury selection is currently underway for the criminal trial in New York City, where Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to the hush money payments. Trump has pleaded not guilty and has repeatedly denied the affair with Stormy Daniels.

Despite Trump’s claims that the cases against him are politically motivated, only 31 percent of respondents in the poll say they are “very confident” that he has been treated fairly by New York prosecutors. This sentiment extends to the other criminal trials Trump is facing, including the Georgia election interference case and the alleged effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Overall, the poll numbers reflect the impact of Trump’s public statements on public sentiment about the various cases against him.
